A young family's four-room flat planned around one honest observation: the household's day starts and ends in motion. Storage, sightlines and lighting were resolved first; the calm, warm palette followed.

The brief

The owners — a couple with two young children — wanted a flat that could absorb the chaos of early childhood without looking like a playground. Their list was specific: a living room with no coffee table to bump heads on, a kitchen that let one person cook while another supervised homework, and bedrooms that could evolve as the children grew.

The challenge

The standard four-room plan dedicates generous area to a corridor that serves little purpose, while the common bedroom sits awkwardly between living room and master bedroom. The family needed genuine storage for two adults' and two children's possessions — in a flat type where storage is usually the first thing value-engineered away.

Design approach

01 — Space planning

The corridor was absorbed into the living zone, turning dead circulation into a play-and-read edge beside the window. The common bedroom became a flexible room: study now, second child's room later, with a wardrobe wall positioned so the room works either way without re-renovating.

02 — Material strategy

Warm oak laminates, a limestone-look porcelain floor and off-white walls form a quiet base. Colour enters through textiles and art — replaceable as tastes change, which matters when the household includes a toddler with opinions.

03 — Storage and carpentry

A full-height storage wall runs along the living room's short edge, housing toys at child height, media, and the household's overflow — fronted in the same oak as the kitchen so the flat reads as one composition. Bedrooms get floor-to-ceiling wardrobes with internals drawn from the family's actual inventory.

04 — Lighting

Three circuits in the living room — cove light for evenings, downlights for cleaning and play, and a reading lamp position at the window — mean the room shifts register through the day without a single wall light cluttering the plan.

Key decisions

No coffee table: A low ottoman does the job and moves. With two children under five, shin-level corners were the real enemy.
Kitchen pass-through: A serving window between kitchen and dining keeps the cooking parent in the conversation — the single change the owners say altered daily life most.
Oak everywhere, once: Using the same oak tone across living wall, kitchen and wardrobes made 92 square metres feel composed rather than furnished.
